Descriptions of each class type and what to expect in each level
What is Salsa?
Salsa! The perfect way to de-stress after work, have fun, meet new people and dance the evening away!
When dancing Salsa you're interpreting rhythms in the music and expressing them through your movements.
Sometimes you will be solo, facing your partner (Open Work) or performing various turn patterns together (Partner Work).
These turn patterns can be very simple or highly intricate and are lots of fun to do!
To sharpen and stylise the way you dance, you can add individual body movements to create your own personal style (Body Movement & Isolations), tighten the way you turn and spin (Spinning & Turn Technique) and use your moves for musical interpretation (Timing & Musicality)
Salsa Partnerwork
Salsa Partnerwork is the main way of dancing Salsa. Moving together with your partner to the beat of the music and being able to adapt to different dance partners whilst expressing yourself and the rhythms.
Master the skill of lead and follow with our Salsa Partnerwork classes. Starting with simple turns and figures then moving into more intricate and challenging combinations. It's so much fun to express the music together and create new and interesting ways in and out of different hand holds.
Salsa Partnerwork - Level 1 - "Conexión"
Salsa, a connection of your body to the music and your partner. In this foundational level, you'll master the essence of Salsa, beat by beat.
Your journey starts here with a basic introduction to the steps, posture, timing, lead and follow techniques, and body movement, enabling you to go out and dance with confidence.
Your basic Partner Work steps are also used in Open Work, so you will become confident moving both solo and partnered before moving up to the next level in both.
- No partner necessary, partners are rotated frequently during the class.
Salsa Partnerwork - Level 2 - "Ritmo"
Understand the dance's structure and the core moves that bring it to life. With precise timing and step-by-step guidance, you'll execute each move flawlessly.
Discover the joy of spontaneous dance, as you learn how these patterns express the rhythms in the music and allow you to play with patterns on the dance floor.
Unleash your creativity and dance with rhythm!
- No partner necessary, partners are rotated frequently during the class.
Salsa Partnerwork - Level 3 - "Bailar"
Combine moves in innovative and intricate ways. Explore new interlocking patterns, add flair with styling, and master double and triple turns.
Challenge yourself with checks and hijacks, multiple spins and begin creating your unique dance style.
- No partner necessary, partners are rotated frequently during the class.
Salsa Partnerwork - Level 4 - "Libertad"
Push your limits! These advanced classes challenge you to master complex patterns with impeccable timing. Experience the thrill of fast-paced partnerwork, intricate, stylistic, and syncopated moves.
Multiple turns and spins will keep you on your toes, ensuring you stand out on the dance floor. Dance with precision, dance with liberation!
- No partner necessary, partners are rotated frequently during the class.
Salsa Open Work
Some parts of the music are great for expressing the rhythms separately from your partner but still playing with the music together, this is referred to as Open Work or "Shines"
Shines are different footwork combinations that express different rhythms in the music and give you personal flair and fluidity of movement.
The best part about them is that they not only make you look better when you move solo, but they also enhance the way you do Partner Work too by making you faster and more accurate with your feet!
Salsa Open Work - Level 2
Basic Level 1 Open Work is taught in the Level 1 Partner Work class, as the footwork is interchangeable with the Partner Work.
From Level 2 on, the Shines are mostly only used for solo expression so are taught separately from the Partner Work classes.
These Shines are short and easy to remember footwork designed to build your ability to dance on the rhythm and freestyle on the dancefloor.
Sometimes you may also learn longer sequences that make you move in different ways and challenge your body.
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Salsa Open Work - Level 3
Once you're getting comfortable with footwork Shines, it's time to step it up in level 3!
We add intricacy, synchopations and turn to the shines, play with the rhythms and add some body movement for extra Sabor (flavour)! These combinations are challenging but build on the foundations learned in the lower levels.
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Salsa Body Movement
One of the best parts about learning Salsa is that it allows for very individual expression in the way that you move. It's not designed for everyone to move identically and creativity is encouraged. Part of this journey is learning to control and move your body in different ways. Which is where our Body Movement and Isolation classes come in.
In these optional technique classes you will learn how to move your body in new ways, build control, range and the ability to move different parts of your body separately from each other and how to link movements together. You can then take this new knowledge and apply it to your Partner Work and Open Work, cultivating your own unique style.
Body Movement & Isolation - All Levels
This is our main Body Movement class and the one we recommend you do each week. The whole class is fluid, moving through each part of your body to the music. The routine is repeated each week with the goal of increasing your range, speed and power. There is no verbal instruction during this class, it's a non-stop sweat session!
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Body Isolation & Application - All Levels
This class is designed for students who are attending the Body Movement & Isolation class regularly. Each class we take one or two of the isolations taught in that class and break it down in lots of detail so that you can get more out the class next time you take it. In addition to the breakdown we also go through some examples of how you can apply those isolations to different Partner or Open Work steps.
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Salsa Spinning & Turning Technique
One of Salsa dancing's main characteristics is its multiple types of turns and spins. These add energy and dynamic movement to the dance and are performed in both Partner Work and Open Work.
There are simple on the spot turns and easy travelling turns which then lead into more challenging travelling pivot turns and super fast spins.
Spinning & Turning Technique - All Levels
If you're finding yourself getting dizzy or disoriented when you turn or spin, or your balance is bad when you come out of a turn, then this is the class for you!
You will learn drills that help you to find your centre, improve your balance and strengthen your body, enabling you to execute multiple turns and spins with grace and ease!
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Salsa Timing & Musicality
The best dancers are the ones who can not only stay on beat but play with the different rhythms of Salsa music and react to the various changes and breaks.
Whilst the basic rhythm is taught in our Level 1 Partner Work classes, our Timing & Musicality classes go much further indepth to give you a solid understanding of the music and how you can use it to keep time and be interpretive.
Timing & Musicality 1 - All Levels
Learn about the different Salsa rhythms. Build an understanding about their structure and how they combine. Recognise changes in tempo and timing. Plus also get hands on with some of the instruments and learn how to create these rhythms yourself!
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
Timing & Musicality 2 - Level 2+
Once you've built an understanding of the music in the previous level, this class will introduce you to various structures that occur in the music that will enable you to better reflect the music through your choice of moves and add musical interpretation to your dance.
You will hear the music very differently and discover more layers to each song that you may not have realised were there prior.
- No partner necessary.
- Suitable for both men and women.
