What is Salsa?

Salsa! The perfect way to de-stress after work, have fun, meet new people and dance the evening away!
When dancing Salsa you're interpreting rhythms in the music and expressing them through your movements.

Sometimes you will be solo, facing your partner (Open Work) or performing various turn patterns together (Partner Work).
These turn patterns can be very simple or highly intricate and are lots of fun to do!

To sharpen and stylise the way you dance, you can add individual body movements to create your own personal style (Body Movement & Isolations), tighten the way you turn and spin (Spinning & Turn Technique) and use your moves for musical interpretation (Timing & Musicality)

Salsa Partnerwork

Salsa Partnerwork is the main way of dancing Salsa. Moving together with your partner to the beat of the music and being able to adapt to different dance partners whilst expressing yourself and the rhythms.

Master the skill of lead and follow with our Salsa Partnerwork classes. Starting with simple turns and figures then moving into more intricate and challenging combinations. It's so much fun to express the music together and create new and interesting ways in and out of different hand holds.

Salsa Open Work

Some parts of the music are great for expressing the rhythms separately from your partner but still playing with the music together, this is referred to as Open Work or "Shines"

Shines are different footwork combinations that express different rhythms in the music and give you personal flair and fluidity of movement.

The best part about them is that they not only make you look better when you move solo, but they also enhance the way you do Partner Work too by making you faster and more accurate with your feet!

Salsa Body Movement

One of the best parts about learning Salsa is that it allows for very individual expression in the way that you move. It's not designed for everyone to move identically and creativity is encouraged. Part of this journey is learning to control and move your body in different ways. Which is where our Body Movement and Isolation classes come in.

In these optional technique classes you will learn how to move your body in new ways, build control, range and the ability to move different parts of your body separately from each other and how to link movements together. You can then take this new knowledge and apply it to your Partner Work and Open Work, cultivating your own unique style.

Salsa Spinning & Turning Technique

One of Salsa dancing's main characteristics is its multiple types of turns and spins. These add energy and dynamic movement to the dance and are performed in both Partner Work and Open Work.

There are simple on the spot turns and easy travelling turns which then lead into more challenging travelling pivot turns and super fast spins.

Salsa Timing & Musicality

The best dancers are the ones who can not only stay on beat but play with the different rhythms of Salsa music and react to the various changes and breaks.

Whilst the basic rhythm is taught in our Level 1 Partner Work classes, our Timing & Musicality classes go much further indepth to give you a solid understanding of the music and how you can use it to keep time and be interpretive.
